Traditional Choir micing has typically involved hanging miniature microphones or full size microphones on ordinary boom stands. Neither solution has been totally satisfactory. Hanging mics are in fixed positions where may not be where you need them for a particular performance. Most hanging mics have their electronics in a small box or tube mounted at the ceiling, and the cable from the mic to the ceiling all too easily picks up interference from many sources including GSM or NexTel phones, and Blackberries. Stand mounted microphones and the stands they are placed on are typically larger than desired, and stand mounted microphones are not always immune to interference from GSM or NexTel phones, and Blackberries.

Audix has solved all these problems with their latest MicroBoom line of microphones. The MB1255 high gain microphone itself is hardly larger than the typical hanging choir mic, but is mounted on the end of a thin 50" long carbon fiber boom. Despite the small size the sound quality is excellent, and the full phantom powered electronics is contained inside the less than 2" long microphone at the end of the MicroBoom. A standard gain MB1250 version is also available. Being totaly self contained allows these latest MicroBooms to reject interference from GSM or NexTel phones, and Blackberries.

These mics are available with the MicroBoom or without the MicroBoom and with a hanging adaptor and stand mount so they can also be used as a conventional hanging choir mic. They are made with the normal Cardioid pickup pattern for maximum rear sound rejection, with a Hypercardioid pickup pattern for a narrower front pickup and less side pickup, or with an Omni pickup pattern that sometimes is desirable for recording but which is generally not optimum for reinforcement use.
